#5 Can Scenario-Based Self-Defense Really Be Pressure-Tested?

The more dangerous a self-defense technique is, the harder it becomes to test safely against genuine resistance. So how can we know whether what we're training actually works? This article looks at pressure-testing the delivery system before and after the dangerous part, and what “realistic training” should actually mean.

Can Scenario-Based Self-Defense Really Be Pressure-Tested?

Self-defense training presents a difficult problem. The more dangerous a technique becomes, the less realistically we can test its final effect against full resistance. So how do we know whether what we are practicing actually works?

This is not specifically a Krav Maga problem. It applies to Functional Wing Chun and almost every other system that claims to prepare people for situations outside the rules of combat sports. In fact, I think it is one of the most important questions any self-defense system should be willing to ask.

Throughout this series, we have looked at Krav Maga's military origins, its transition to civilian self-defense, its use of scenarios and techniques, and the role that aggression and physicality play in its training. Scenario training naturally leads us to one final question: how much of what happens in those scenarios can actually be tested?

The answer is complicated, because realistic self-defense training is not simply a matter of making everything faster, harder and more violent.

Combat sports have an enormous advantage

If we want to test boxing, the basic method is relatively straightforward. Put two trained people together and allow each of them to try to box the other while actively preventing the other person from succeeding. There are gloves, rules and other safety compromises, but the central problem remains recognizable: hit without being hit.

Wrestling has the same advantage. One person tries to take down and control another person who is actively trying to prevent that and do the same in return. Brazilian jiu-jitsu can allow both practitioners to grapple against substantial resistance because submissions can normally be released when the other person taps, while MMA combines an even larger range of these problems.

All of these sports have rules, and none perfectly reproduces civilian violence. But they preserve something extremely valuable:

The opponent is allowed to make your solution fail.

Self-defense has a much harder problem.

The self-defense paradox

Some of the techniques most commonly used to distinguish self-defense from combat sports are precisely the techniques that are hardest to test. We cannot repeatedly attack each other's eyes to find out whether an eye attack really works, we cannot realistically strike the throat, and we cannot use real knives to discover whether our knife defenses survive full resistance.

Protective equipment helps, as do training weapons and controlled contact, but every safety measure changes the problem to some degree. If I wear a helmet, I may accept strikes I would desperately avoid without one; if I know the knife is rubber, I may take risks I would never take against a real blade. The training can become physically intense while still remaining different from the problem it is supposed to represent.

This creates a paradox:

The more dangerous the intended effect of a technique becomes, the less directly we can pressure-test that effect.

No self-defense system completely escapes this problem. Functional Wing Chun certainly does not. The important question is what we do about it.

Looking realistic is not the same as being realistic

Scenario training can look extremely convincing. People wear normal clothes, someone shouts, the lights are dimmed, protective equipment is used and an attacker rushes forward aggressively with a rubber knife. Physically and visually, this may appear much closer to a street attack than two people sparring in a gym.

But consider what the defender may already know. They may know they are going to be attacked, who the attacker is, that the attack is about to begin and that a knife will be involved. In some drills, they may even know approximately how the knife will be used.

The scenario has increased one kind of realism while potentially removing another.

For civilian self-defense, one of the largest uncertainties often occurs before the physical attack:

Is this person actually going to attack me?

If the answer is already supplied by the drill, an important part of the real problem has disappeared.

Physical realism and decision realism

It may therefore be useful to separate two different kinds of realism.

Physical realism concerns the physical conditions of the encounter: how fast the attacker is moving, how hard they are attacking, whether they are resisting, whether there is a wall, whether we are tired and whether we are wearing normal clothing. All of these things matter.

But there is also decision realism. Do I know whether an attack is coming? Do I know when it will begin? Do I know what kind of attack is coming? Can the attacker change their mind, abandon one attack and choose another, or continue after my first response fails? Am I allowed to act before the attack has fully developed?

A drill can be extremely intense physically while containing very little decision uncertainty. That distinction matters because civilian self-defense requires both physical ability and decision-making under incomplete information.

Resistance is not enough

There is another common way to pressure-test a self-defense technique. Teach the technique cooperatively first, then tell the attacker to resist.

That is certainly an improvement, but it can create another problem. The defender has been given a technique they are supposed to make work, while the attacker has been told to prevent that same technique from working. The defender tries harder, the attacker resists harder, and soon both people are using enormous physical effort around a solution that may simply no longer fit the situation.

We have created resistance, but not necessarily adaptability.

Pressure testing should not only ask:

“Can you force this technique to work against more resistance?”

It should also ask:

“What do you do when it doesn't work?”

That second question is much more important to Functional Wing Chun.

Failure is information

We do not add resistance primarily to prove that our techniques work. We add resistance to discover where they stop working.

A student performs a technique successfully. Good. Now the partner changes something. The technique becomes harder. Perhaps eventually it stops completely. Also good. We have discovered something.

Why did progress stop? What changed? What is physically preventing us from continuing? Has the opponent's resistance created another opportunity, and can we adapt without abandoning our objective?

Resistance is therefore not simply something we have to overcome.

Resistance gives us information.

The more experienced practitioner should become increasingly capable of using that information rather than simply responding with more force. This is the basic process we repeatedly train:

WORKS → BLOCKED OR COUNTERED → ADAPT → WORKS AGAIN → CONTINUE

Failure is not outside the training method. Failure is part of it.

Dangerous techniques create a special problem

But what happens when the technique itself cannot safely be pressure-tested?

Consider an attack to the eyes. If the drill ends when the defender touches the attacker's face and everyone agrees that the eye attack would have worked, we have introduced an assumption. Perhaps it would have worked, perhaps it would have missed, perhaps it would only have made partial contact, or perhaps the attacker would have continued anyway.

We cannot know because we cannot safely perform the action required to find out.

For this reason, Functional Wing Chun does not put much emphasis on isolated “try to hit the vulnerable target and hope it finishes the encounter” techniques. Instead, we put much more emphasis on the system that delivers the attack and on what happens immediately afterwards.

Pressure-test before and after the dangerous moment

If we cannot safely pressure-test the damaging moment itself, we can pressure-test what happens around it.

Can I establish a useful position against resistance? Can I prevent the opponent from freely continuing their attack? Can I create access to the target while maintaining balance and structure? Those parts can be tested.

Then we safely simulate the dangerous action.

But importantly, the drill does not have to end there. The training partner remains capable of resisting, so another set of questions begins immediately. Can I maintain or regain a useful position? What if the attack did not have the effect I expected? What if the opponent moves, counters or changes direction? Can I create another opportunity without surrendering the one I already had?

This gives us a simple approach:

PRESSURE-TEST → SIMULATE → PRESSURE-TEST

We test the delivery system before the dangerous action, safely simulate the part we cannot realistically perform, and then test the system again immediately afterwards. The dangerous moment is surrounded by something that is allowed to fail.

Never assume the last attack worked

This is an important principle in FWC.

Never make the next opportunity depend on the last attack succeeding.

A punch may miss, an eye attack may fail, a strike may land without producing the effect we expected, or the opponent may simply be tougher than anticipated. If our entire strategy depends on one action producing a predetermined result, everything that follows depends on an assumption.

Instead, we try to preserve the ability to continue. We create the opportunity, attack, maintain or regain positional advantage, observe what actually happened and continue if necessary.

If the opponent is no longer a threat, there is no reason to continue. But we do not want to surrender a useful position merely because the technique we intended to use has ended.

The opponent determines whether the situation is finished

This also changes how we think about the word finish.

A finishing technique is something we perform. A finished situation is an outcome. Those are not necessarily the same thing.

We cannot simply decide that a particular strike should have finished the fight. The situation tells us whether it did. Can the opponent still effectively attack? Are they still trying to attack? Do we still need to protect ourselves?

If the answer is no, we stop. If the answer is yes, our method needs to allow us to continue without rebuilding everything from the beginning.

The goal is still to finish a dangerous encounter as quickly as possible, but we do not assume in advance which particular action will produce that finish.

Don't voluntarily surrender the position

This principle has been part of Functional Wing Chun from the beginning.

When we achieve a useful position, we do not want to give it away simply because one technique has ended. The opponent may block, retreat, change direction, counter or break contact completely, but none of those things automatically requires us to reset.

If we can safely continue toward our objective, we continue. If the opponent's response changes the problem, we adapt. Only when continuing from the existing situation becomes unsafe or structurally unsound do we deliberately reset and rebuild the conditions we need.

This does not mean desperately holding onto physical contact, controlling the opponent at all costs or continuing to attack after the threat has ended. It means something simpler:

Do not voluntarily surrender an advantage while the problem remains unfinished.

A process without a predetermined endpoint

There is a small piece of history at J's Gym that has come to mean much more to me over the years. When the gym was new, one of our beginner students designed our logo and incorporated the J and S into an infinity-like shape.

At the time, it was simply a clever piece of design, but it unintentionally represented something that has been part of the way I teach from the beginning.

A technique has an endpoint. The process does not necessarily have one.

Position → opportunity → attack → position → opportunity...

Not endlessly for its own sake, and not because we want prolonged fights. Quite the opposite: we want the encounter finished as quickly as possible. But the loop only ends when the situation actually gives us a reason to stop, not simply because we have reached the final movement of a technique.

In that sense, the opponent tells us when we are finished. Until then, we preserve our ability to continue.

The training partner must be allowed to make us fail

This is perhaps the most important requirement for meaningful pressure testing.

The training partner must genuinely be allowed to make our solution fail. Not injure us and not behave recklessly, but defeat the particular solution we are attempting.

If every drill is ultimately required to end with the defender successfully completing the technique, resistance becomes limited by the answer we have already decided upon. Sometimes the correct result of training should simply be:

It didn't work.

That is useful information.

Now we can ask why. Perhaps the timing was wrong, the position was poor, the technique was inappropriate, or the system itself has encountered a problem it cannot currently solve. All of those discoveries are more valuable than pretending the technique succeeded.

Pressure testing should give reality enough freedom to prove us wrong.

Resistance must still be progressive

None of this means throwing beginners immediately into unrestricted fighting. That often produces very little learning because the beginner becomes tense, relies on strength and falls back on whatever instinctive reactions they already possess.

Resistance needs to grow with ability. Initially, the problem may be predictable and cooperative. Then the partner begins resisting, the resistance becomes stronger, the direction changes, counters appear and several possibilities become available.

Gradually, the student receives less advance information about what is going to happen.

The objective is not to make training maximally difficult. It is to introduce enough difficulty that the student must actually perceive, decide and adapt.

Scenarios should test the system

This also gives scenario training a useful role.

Instead of asking:

“What new technique should we learn for this scenario?”

we can ask:

“What happens to our existing method when we put it here?”

Against a wall. Seated. Against an unfamiliar grab. Against a weapon. In a confined space. With another person nearby.

The scenario changes the constraints, and then we observe what survives. Perhaps the existing system works with only minor adaptation; perhaps something important breaks. If so, we have learned something.

As discussed earlier in this series:

Expand the situations. Do not expand the system unless the situations force you to.

Scenario training can therefore become a way of testing adaptability rather than simply adding another answer.

Pressure testing begins before contact

There is one final limitation we should acknowledge.

Most pressure testing begins after both people already know:

We are fighting now.

Civilian self-defense begins earlier.

Someone approaches. Are they dangerous? Should I move? Should I create distance? Should I become ready? Can I leave? When does acting early become justified, and when do I need to take initiative?

These decisions are extremely difficult to reproduce perfectly in a training environment, but ignoring them means ignoring a major part of civilian self-defense.

Earlier in this series, we described uncertainty as beginning at three levels:

INTENT → ACTION → INTERACTION

Do I know whether something is going to happen? If something happens, do I know what the person will do? Once we physically interact, do I know how they will respond?

Traditional pressure testing is very good at exploring the third question. Scenario training can help explore the second. Good civilian self-defense training should also devote considerable attention to the first.

What does realistic self-defense training really mean?

Perhaps we therefore need a broader definition of realism.

Realistic training is not simply training that looks violent, hitting harder, wearing protective equipment or using a rubber knife. Nor is it automatically reproducing more detailed scenarios.

Useful realism includes uncertainty. It includes resistance, decisions, an opponent who can change what they are doing, and most importantly, the genuine possibility that our preferred solution will fail.

No self-defense system can reproduce reality perfectly. We cannot safely test every dangerous effect, and we cannot completely reproduce the uncertainty and consequences of real violence inside a gym, so the objective should not be to pretend that we can.

Instead, we should identify the parts that can be tested and give them as much freedom as safely possible.

Test the position and the delivery. Safely simulate what cannot be tested. Then test what happens afterwards. Allow failure, use resistance as information, adapt, continue when necessary and stop when the situation genuinely allows us to stop.

Pressure testing is not about making training as violent as possible. It is about giving reality enough freedom to prove us wrong.
