TRAIN IN A LANGUAGE YOU UNDERSTAND

Training
available in English.

No Japanese ability is required.

You don’t need to be bilingual

Lessons can be taught in English, allowing international residents and English-speaking children to understand the training clearly from the beginning.

Instruction is also available in Japanese. This allows English-speaking and Japanese-speaking students to train together without either language becoming a requirement for joining.

English speakers are welcome

You can receive the explanations and corrections you need in English. No Japanese ability is required.

Japanese speakers are equally welcome

Japanese instruction is also available, allowing local and international residents to train together.

For children

English-speaking children can learn martial arts in a language they understand. Japanese-speaking children can participate normally while also enjoying natural exposure to English through shared training.

This is a martial arts class, not an English conversation school.
Understanding the training and practising safely always come first.

THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

Self-defense does not
begin with fighting.

Functional Wing Chun does not treat physical techniques as the beginning of self-defense. By the time someone attacks, many earlier opportunities to prevent the situation may already have been lost.

Students first learn to notice potential danger, prepare to move and maintain safer distance.

Improving the chance that you never need to fight is also part of self-defense.

01 AWARENESS

Notice

Pay attention to the surroundings and recognize when something begins to change. Earlier information creates more options.

02 READINESS

Prepare

Avoid freezing and be ready to move. Readiness can include leaving, using your voice and calling for help.

03 DISTANCE

Create distance

Maintain enough space to make it harder for someone to touch, grab or attack you. Distance is one of the clearest first safety measures for children and adults.

FOR KIDS Children’s self-defense

The objective is not to win a fight.
It is to get out safely.

Children also learn how to protect themselves physically when necessary, but defeating another child or adult is not the objective.

Training prioritizes recognizing trouble, leaving early, creating distance and getting help from a trusted adult. Physical responses are introduced safely and according to the child’s age when simply leaving is no longer possible.

What do you do when the odds are against you?

Training to improve your chances in difficult and unpredictable situations.
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Learning from resistance

HOW WE TRAIN

Memorizing techniques
is not enough.

A memorized technique may work when a partner responds exactly as expected. A real person, however, resists, changes direction and reacts in ways that cannot always be predicted.

Functional Wing Chun combines forms and fundamental skills with progressive resistance and partner feedback. Students gradually learn how to adapt when the original solution is blocked or the situation changes.

01

Begin with a manageable problem

Students are not immediately placed in overwhelming situations. We begin with one understandable problem, then gradually add speed, choices and uncertainty.

02

Add genuine resistance safely

The partner does not simply allow the technique to work. Resistance is adjusted to create an appropriate challenge without sacrificing safety.

03

Learn to solve the problem

Rather than forcing one predetermined answer, students learn from the other person’s response, find a better position and continue toward the objective.

Children and adults do not train at the same intensity. Difficulty, speed and resistance are adjusted to the student’s age, size and experience so progress can be challenging and safe.

Jesper Nielsen

Founder of J’s Gym Functional Wing Chun

Jesper has studied Wing Chun for more than 30 years and founded J’s Gym in 2005. He teaches Functional Wing Chun as a practical method for dealing with resistance and unpredictable reactions, rather than simply reproducing predetermined techniques.

His wider martial arts experience includes karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, aikido, grappling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and escrima/Kali.

EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN

Previous children’s Wing Chun instruction

In addition to teaching adults, Jesper previously taught Wing Chun to children through an extracurricular program at the British School in Tokyo.

He has experience adapting explanations, training methods and difficulty to children’s ages and levels of understanding while maintaining a safe learning environment.
