What Changed When Krav Maga Became Civilian Self-Defense?
Krav Maga was shaped by a military problem: give soldiers useful close-combat skills without requiring them to become martial artists. But what happens when that same approach becomes a civilian self-defense system that people may practice for many years?
In the previous article, we looked at the environment that shaped early military Krav Maga. Soldiers had limited time for unarmed combat training, while weapons, physical conditioning, tactics, teamwork and many other military skills were competing for their attention. Under those circumstances, simplicity made sense. A relatively small number of practical solutions, trained with physical commitment and decisiveness, could give soldiers useful options when their normal military tools were temporarily unavailable.
When Imi Lichtenfeld retired from military service and increasingly began developing Krav Maga for civilians, however, something fundamental changed. The student changed, the available training time changed, and eventually the training system changed with them.
From limited military training to years of civilian practice
A soldier does not need an endless Krav Maga curriculum. At some point, the soldier has learned enough close-combat material for the role it is expected to play within a much larger military system. The original military approach appears to have recognized this clearly. During the 1950s, the available close-combat material was deliberately reduced rather than continually expanded, with the reported 1953 curriculum review selecting approximately 35 techniques from a considerably larger body of material.
Civilian training created a very different situation. A civilian might train twice a week for five years, ten years or even longer, and Krav Maga therefore developed into a long-term training system with rankings, progression and an increasingly broad curriculum. More attacks could be considered, more positions explored and more specialized solutions introduced. There is nothing inherently wrong with that; if students have more time available, it is perfectly reasonable to teach them more. But it does raise an interesting question:
Is learning more always the same as becoming better?
The attraction of scenario training
Krav Maga is well known for training recognizable self-defense situations. Someone grabs you, someone chokes you, someone punches, someone attacks with a knife, or someone threatens you with a weapon. The student is presented with a clearly defined problem and taught a practical way of dealing with it.
For a beginner, this approach has obvious advantages because it makes self-defense concrete. Rather than first having to understand an entire fighting system, the student can begin with a problem that is easy to recognize: if this happens, here is something you can do. This also fits the original military requirement extremely well. When training time is limited, identifying high-priority emergencies and giving soldiers relatively simple solutions is a sensible approach.
Long-term civilian training, however, creates another question. A choke can come from the front or behind, while standing or on the ground, against a wall or while being pulled backwards, with the arms free or trapped. The same process can be applied to grabs, punches, kicks, knives, weapons and almost every other form of attack. Every variation is legitimate, and each can potentially justify a slightly different solution.
This creates a natural tendency for scenario-based curricula to expand because, the more accurately we try to represent the variety found in reality, the more situations there are to address. Eventually, we have to ask whether becoming familiar with more situations necessarily means becoming better prepared for uncertainty.
And that leads to an even more fundamental question.
Where does uncertainty actually begin?
When we talk about self-defense, uncertainty is often treated as though it begins with the attack.
Will the attacker punch? Will they grab? Will they kick? Will they use a weapon?
Those are important questions, but in civilian self-defense there is usually an earlier uncertainty:
Is there actually going to be an attack at all?
Someone may be approaching us, behaving aggressively, standing too close or simply making us uncomfortable, but we often do not yet know what they intend to do. They may be dangerous, or they may not be.
This creates one of the most difficult problems in civilian self-defense. If we wait until we are completely certain that an attack is happening, we may already be late, but at the same time we obviously cannot treat every uncertain interaction as though violence has already begun.
This is why Functional Wing Chun places so much importance on awareness, readiness and distance. They allow us to improve our situation without first having to decide with certainty that the other person is an attacker. We can notice what is happening, become ready, maintain or create safer distance and improve our position without unnecessarily escalating the situation.
If nothing happens, very little has been lost. If an attack does develop, however, those same actions may have given us more time, better position and more information.
Good self-defense should not require certainty before it begins.
Distance buys more than reaction time
Distance is often described simply as a way of giving ourselves more time to react, but I think that understates its value. Distance also gives uncertainty time to resolve.
If someone is some distance away, we may have very little information about their intentions. If they continue closing despite our movement, that tells us something. If they ignore a verbal boundary, we learn more. If their posture or hand position changes, we learn more again, and if they suddenly accelerate toward us the situation has become considerably clearer.
Throughout this process, however, we are not simply standing still and waiting for enough information to make a decision. We can simultaneously improve our position, preserve our options and make a potential attack more difficult.
That is already part of shaping the fight.
In fact, shaping the fight begins before we even know whether there will be one.
This is particularly important in civilian self-defense because uncertainty of intent is normal. A soldier in an active combat environment may sometimes have much clearer information about who represents a threat, whereas the civilian usually cannot assume that someone approaching them is an enemy. A useful civilian self-defense strategy therefore needs actions that improve safety while still allowing for the possibility that no violence will occur.
Distance is extremely valuable precisely because it can do both.
Then comes uncertainty about the attack
As the possibility of violence increases, another uncertainty becomes more important:
If they attack, what will they do?
This is the uncertainty that scenario-based self-defense training addresses particularly well. A punch, grab, choke, knife attack and tackle are genuinely different physical problems, and there is obvious value in experiencing all of them during training.
The question is not whether scenarios should be practiced. Functional Wing Chun uses scenarios too.
The more interesting question is what role those scenarios play in the larger training method.
One approach is to develop a repertoire of reliable responses to important possibilities. If this happens, use this response; if something different happens, another response may be more appropriate. With enough practice, these responses can become increasingly automatic, so it would be too simplistic to imagine an experienced practitioner consciously searching through a mental catalogue of techniques during an attack.
However, another possibility is to ask whether we can reduce the number of distinctions that need to be made in the first place.
Instead of preparing equally for every kind of fight the opponent might create, can we influence what kind of fight develops?
Shape the fight
Grappling provides an easy example.
A wrestler does not try to become equally skilled at every possible striking exchange. His strategy is to close the appropriate distance, establish the connection he needs and take the opponent down. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner similarly tries to move the encounter toward an environment in which their skills are strongest.
This does not mean the opponent loses all freedom or that everything will happen according to plan. It simply means that the practitioner does not passively accept whatever type of fight the opponent chooses.
They try to shape the fight.
Once we introduce that idea, the discussion about the number of techniques changes considerably. Perhaps the objective is not simply to learn fewer techniques. Perhaps the objective is to need fewer separate techniques because we have reduced the number of different problems the opponent is able to create.
This is one of the central ideas behind Functional Wing Chun. We cannot know exactly what an opponent will do, so rather than attempting to prepare equally for every possible attack, we try to make different encounters increasingly become variations of the type of fight we practice every time we train.
Awareness, readiness and distance begin that process before physical engagement. Once violence becomes increasingly likely or unavoidable, position and initiative continue it.
Initiative reduces uncertainty further
Initiative does not simply mean attacking someone first. It means influencing the opponent's time, position and available choices so that they are not completely free to organize the encounter on their terms.
When an opponent is completely free, the number of things they might do is enormous. They can punch, kick, grab, tackle, move, fake, retreat or potentially reach for a weapon. If we remain entirely reactive, we have to deal with whichever problem they choose to create.
Once we create a problem that demands a response, however, their useful possibilities begin to narrow. We no longer need to prepare equally for everything the opponent could theoretically have done; instead, we deal with what actually happens inside an interaction that we have helped create.
This is another form of simplification.
Shape the fight, and the problem becomes smaller.
And then there is the uncertainty no technique can remove
Even if we correctly identify an attack, there is another uncertainty that is unavoidable:
What will actually happen when we interact?
I throw a punch. Perhaps it lands, perhaps the opponent covers, perhaps they move, perhaps they grab my arm, or perhaps we collide in a way neither of us expected. My movement changes their position, their response changes mine, and the interaction itself continuously produces new information.
No realistic fighting system can completely predict this.
This is why adaptability matters.
We do not want the first technique to become a promise that must be completed regardless of what happens. We begin with an intention, observe the result and continue from the situation that actually exists.
A technique should give us direction, not lock us into a prediction.
If the original movement continues to work, there is no reason to change it. If the opponent's response changes the problem, however, the solution has to change as well.
The opponent adjusts, new information becomes available, and we adapt again.
What does scenario training temporarily remove?
Thinking about uncertainty in this way also gives us a useful way of evaluating training scenarios.
Imagine practicing a defense against a right punch. For the purpose of learning, we have temporarily removed several uncertainties. We know an attack is coming, we know it will be a punch, we know which hand will be used and we may even know approximately when it will arrive.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this.
Beginners need simplification because learning everything simultaneously would make developing the movement unnecessarily difficult.
The important question is what happens as skill increases.
Does the training gradually put uncertainty back?
Perhaps we first remove which hand will attack. Later the attacker can punch or grab. The timing becomes less predictable, resistance is added, and eventually the attacker is allowed to change their action when the defender begins responding.
At some point, the practitioner may know their own objective without knowing exactly how the interaction will develop.
Now the task has changed.
The student is no longer simply demonstrating whether they remember the correct technique.
They are solving a changing problem.
Scenario training itself is therefore not the problem. The important question is whether the practitioner eventually learns to function when the scenario stops behaving as expected.
From reproducing techniques to solving problems
Motor-learning research provides some useful support for this distinction. Repeating the same movement under predictable conditions can produce rapid improvements in practice, but good practice performance is not necessarily the same thing as long-term learning or the ability to transfer a skill into unfamiliar circumstances.
Variable practice introduces a different challenge because conditions change and the learner repeatedly has to recognize relevant information and adjust the solution. That does not mean beginners should immediately be placed in complete chaos; a more useful progression is gradual:
Learn the technique → introduce controlled variation → add resistance → allow failure → require adaptation → gradually increase uncertainty.
At first, the student's task is largely to reproduce what the teacher has shown. Eventually, the task becomes understanding why progress stopped and finding a way to continue.
At that point, techniques become tools for problem solving rather than answers that have to be reproduced exactly.
Scenario training still has an important role
There is an obvious and completely reasonable defense of Krav Maga's scenario approach: self-defense training should include bad situations because real people make mistakes.
Awareness can fail, distance can disappear, someone can surprise us, and sometimes an attacker establishes contact before we have an opportunity to influence the situation. If we only train from ideal positions, we may be completely unprepared when those positions are lost.
Functional Wing Chun needs recovery training too.
The question is therefore not whether we should practice escaping bad situations, but where those situations should sit within the overall self-defense strategy.
Should recovery from an established attack be the point around which most physical self-defense training is organized, or should greater emphasis be placed on preventing that disadvantage from becoming established in the first place?
We need both, but they do not necessarily deserve equal emphasis.
The later we solve the problem, the more expensive it can become
Imagine the same confrontation developing gradually. A suspicious person approaches, enters our defensive distance, begins an attack, makes contact, establishes a grip and eventually gains a dominant position.
The later we begin solving the problem, the more advantages we may already have surrendered. The attacker may now have momentum, structure, contact or position, all of which have to be overcome before we can improve the situation.
Good technique can reduce the amount of physical force required, but it cannot make disadvantage irrelevant.
This is another reason Functional Wing Chun places so much emphasis on awareness, readiness and distance. The objective is not merely to become better at escaping difficult situations, but to avoid unnecessarily allowing the situation to become that difficult.
Distance doesn't just give us more time to react. It gives uncertainty more time to resolve before we have to solve it physically.
What should happen to strength as skill increases?
Physical attributes matter in every martial art. Being stronger, faster, fitter and more explosive is useful, and pretending otherwise would be unrealistic. Krav Maga's military environment understandably places considerable value on these attributes, together with aggression, decisiveness and the ability to continue under physical stress.
For civilian self-defense, however, there is another question worth considering:
What should happen to our dependence on those attributes as skill increases?
Functional Wing Chun deliberately aims to reduce that dependence. Beginners often compensate for poor timing, structure and position by using more strength, while increasing experience should allow better distance, earlier action, stronger structure, better positioning and better use of information to gradually replace unnecessary physical effort.
The experienced practitioner can still use strength.
The difference is that they should need less of it to solve the same problem.
This matters particularly in civilian self-defense because the people who need self-defense are not necessarily young, athletic, naturally aggressive or physically powerful, and even those who possess those attributes today cannot assume they will possess them forever.
Three kinds of uncertainty
Perhaps we can now describe the problem more clearly.
The first is uncertainty of intent:
Is there actually going to be an attack?
Awareness, readiness and distance allow us to manage that uncertainty while preserving options.
The second is uncertainty of action:
If violence begins, what will the other person do?
Position and initiative can help influence the situation and reduce the number of useful choices available to the opponent.
The third is uncertainty of interaction:
What happens when our actions meet?
Contact provides information, while adaptability allows us to continue from the situation that actually develops rather than the one we predicted.
The objective is not to eliminate uncertainty because that is impossible.
The objective is to avoid requiring certainty before we can act intelligently.
A useful self-defense action should ideally improve our situation across several possible outcomes. If we create distance and the person turns out to be harmless, little has been lost. If they are dangerous, that distance may become extremely valuable. If we improve our position and nothing happens, nothing important has been sacrificed; if violence develops, that same position may give us better options.
Good self-defense should work with uncertainty, not wait for uncertainty to disappear.
So, more techniques or fewer?
Seen from this perspective, the question itself becomes less important.
The objective should not be to create the smallest possible martial art, just as progress should not automatically mean collecting an ever larger number of techniques. We need enough tools to solve genuinely different problems.
But before adding another solution, there is another question worth asking:
Can we reduce the number of problems that require separate solutions?
Awareness can remove some problems entirely. Readiness allows us to act earlier. Distance forces an opponent to cross space and gives intent more time to reveal itself. Initiative influences what happens next. Position and structure reduce useful choices. Contact provides information, while adaptability deals with whatever variation remains.
If apparently different attacks can increasingly be shaped into variations of the same underlying problem, we can spend considerably more training time developing a smaller number of skills more deeply.
The objective isn't simply fewer techniques.
The objective is fewer problems requiring separate answers.
Two different ways of dealing with uncertainty
This may ultimately be the most interesting difference between the approaches.
One way of dealing with uncertainty is to accept that reality contains many different problems, identify the important ones and develop reliable solutions for them. This is a rational approach, and it helps explain much of Krav Maga's scenario-based training.
Another approach begins with the same uncertainty but asks a different question:
Can we take useful action before we know exactly what is happening, and then shape the developing interaction so that many apparently different situations become variations of problems we already know how to solve?
That is the direction Functional Wing Chun takes.
Both approaches require techniques, both require serious practice, both benefit from experiencing realistic scenarios, and neither can remove uncertainty completely. The difference lies more in where the uncertainty is addressed and how much certainty the practitioner needs before acting.
Perhaps, then, the most useful question isn't:
“Which system has better techniques?”
It might be:
“Does your training mainly prepare you for more possible answers, or does it progressively teach you to need fewer of them?”
For long-term civilian self-defense training, I think that is a question worth asking.
