Form Can Be Deceiving
In martial arts, we often judge correctness by appearance.
Does the movement look like the teacher’s movement? Is the hand in the correct position? Is the elbow at the correct angle? Is this how the technique is performed in the lineage?
These are useful questions—but they can also be misleading.
Two movements can look almost identical and function very differently.
Which Version Is Correct?
I once had a student who had previously trained Wing Chun in another country. She explained that her former teacher was only a few generations removed from the source of the system, implying that his way of performing a particular movement was therefore more correct than mine.
My answer was simple:
If the form is based on function, we should be able to test it.
But that immediately raises another question:
Test it for what?
Before we can test a movement, we need to understand its objective.
If we don't know what a technique is supposed to accomplish, resistance tells us very little. We might push harder, change the movement, brace against the opponent, or find some other way to succeed.
We have adapted—but we don't necessarily know whether we have improved the technique.
The objective gives the test meaning.
Looking Right and Working Right Are Not the Same
I was reminded of this recently while working with two advanced students.
Both knew the movements well. From the outside, their positions looked correct. They were trying carefully to reproduce what I was showing them.
But when resistance was added, something was wrong.
Power was leaking.
The upper and lower body were not properly connected, so the force generated by the body wasn't reaching the point where it was needed.
Interestingly, the problem was difficult to see.
The students believed they were copying my position accurately—and visually, they largely were.
I had to physically adjust their bodies with my hands, sometimes moving them slightly away from what they felt was the correct position.
Suddenly the structure worked better.
To someone watching from across the room, the before and after might have looked almost identical.
Under resistance, however, the difference was obvious.
Visible Form Is Not Functional Structure
This is one of the limitations of learning martial arts primarily through appearance.
We can copy the shape of a movement without reproducing the mechanics that make the movement work.
The arm can be in approximately the right place while the shoulder is carrying too much tension.
The stance can look correct while the legs and upper body are disconnected.
The elbow can appear to have the right angle while force is escaping somewhere else in the structure.
As practitioners become more experienced, these problems may actually become harder to see. Beginners often make large, visible mistakes. Advanced practitioners can reproduce the external shape quite well while small structural problems remain hidden inside it.
Resistance exposes those problems.
Resistance reveals differences that appearance cannot.
Form Needs an Objective
This doesn't mean that form is unimportant.
Form gives us a starting point. It preserves useful solutions and gives us something that can be practiced and transmitted.
But form alone cannot tell us whether we have understood those solutions.
For that, we need an objective.
In Functional Wing Chun, we can think of the process as:
Objective → Form → Resistance → Feedback → Adjustment
First, understand what the movement is supposed to accomplish.
Then learn the form that provides a possible solution.
Add appropriate resistance.
Observe what happens.
Then adjust the movement according to the feedback.
The adjustment may be almost invisible. A few centimeters, a change in tension, a better connection through the body, or a slightly different direction of pressure may completely change the result.
The goal is not to make the movement look different.
The goal is to make it function.
Form Is a Hypothesis
This gives us another way of thinking about traditional forms and techniques.
Form gives us a hypothesis. Function gives us a way to test it.
Instead of asking only:
“Is this the correct way to perform the movement?”
we can also ask:
“What is this movement supposed to accomplish?”
“Under what conditions should it work?”
“What happens when appropriate resistance is added?”
“If it fails, where and why does it fail?”
This moves the discussion away from simply comparing appearances, teachers, or generations.
A movement should not be correct merely because it looks familiar.
Nor should we change a movement simply because another version appears to work.
We need to understand the objective, test the function, and use the feedback to improve the form.
Sometimes the result will look almost exactly like what we were doing before.
But it will no longer only look right.
It will have a reason for being that way.
