The Wooden Dummy Is More Than a Form

How We Use the Wooden Dummy at Functional Wing Chun

For a beginner, learning the wooden-dummy form has real value.

The student learns fixed patterns, becomes familiar with the shape of the dummy and develops a basic understanding of how to move around it. Simply remembering the sequence requires attention and coordination, but the student does not yet have to make many decisions. The form gives them somewhere to begin.

The problem comes when repeating the form becomes the final objective.

Many practitioners spend years performing the same sequence and searching for applications hidden inside it. They learn a movement from the form and then try to find a situation in which that movement might work.

But real problems do not usually arrive in the exact shape required by a fixed sequence.

Start With the Problem

At Functional Wing Chun, we also use the wooden dummy in the opposite direction.

The process begins during partner training. A student attempts to enter, clear an obstruction or continue forward—but becomes stuck. The partner’s resistance reveals a real problem:

• There is not enough space to deflect.
• The body is in the wrong position.
• One arm becomes trapped or overloaded.
• The student attacks before occupying the space.
• The first solution works, but leaves no good continuation.

We then take that particular problem to the wooden dummy.

The dummy provides a stable structure that does not move to help us. We can slow the situation down, examine our position and explore the options available. We can change the angle, footwork, timing or use of the hands until we find a solution that fits the problem.

Once we find a promising answer, we can repeat it many times without exhausting or injuring a training partner.

Then we return to partner training and test it again.

A Diagnostic Tool

This makes the wooden dummy more than an object on which we perform a memorized form. It becomes a diagnostic and development tool.

The training cycle looks like this:

Encounter a problem against a partner.

Examine it on the wooden dummy.

Explore different options.

Drill the most promising solution.

Return to the partner and test it against resistance.

Sometimes the solution works. Sometimes resistance reveals another weakness, and we return to the dummy with better information.

The dummy cannot tell us whether a technique truly works against timing, movement and resistance. Only another person can provide that feedback. But a partner is not always the best place to stop, investigate and repeat a movement hundreds of times.

The two forms of training support each other.

From Remembering to Investigating

For a beginner, the wooden-dummy form provides structure. It teaches fixed patterns and helps the student become comfortable with the tool.

But as experience grows, wooden-dummy training can become something more.

Instead of asking:

“What is the application of this movement from the form?”

we can begin asking:

“What problem am I encountering, and how can the dummy help me investigate it?”

That change transforms the wooden dummy from something we perform into something we use.

The form introduces us to the tool. Partner training gives us the problem. The wooden dummy gives us a place to investigate and repeat possible solutions. Resistance tells us whether we have actually found an answer.

When a Technique Gets Blocked: Learning to Adapt

Learning a martial arts or self-defense technique is relatively straightforward. A teacher shows you what to do, you practice the movement, and eventually you can make it work.

But what happens when the other person doesn't react the way you expected?

They may resist more strongly, block what you are doing, move differently, or counterattack. A technique that worked perfectly a moment ago can suddenly stop working.

This is where simply knowing more techniques is not necessarily enough. You also need to learn how to adjust when the situation changes.

Bruce Lee famously used the image of water to describe adaptability: rather than becoming fixed in one shape, change according to what you encounter. It is a powerful idea, but it also raises a practical question:

How do you actually train someone to become adaptable?

In Functional Wing Chun, one way we train this is by first allowing a technique to work, then deliberately adding resistance or a counter and asking the student to find a way to continue.

The basic progression looks like this:

WORKS → BLOCKED / COUNTERED → ADAPT → WORKS → CONTINUE → FINISH

Adaptation, however, is not the goal of the exercise. We are not trying to become endlessly creative or demonstrate how many different solutions we know. If fighting has become unavoidable, the overall objective remains much simpler:

Finish the fight as quickly as possible.

Adaptability is one of the things that helps us do that. When the opponent stops the route we originally chose, we need to be able to adjust without unnecessarily giving up the initiative and starting again.

First, we need a direction

Perhaps the student begins with a Pak Sao and punch. The teacher demonstrates it, the student learns the basic movement, and against the initial response it works. That gives us a starting point—a direction toward the objective.

Adaptability does not mean standing in front of someone waiting for random things to happen and then trying to react to each one. We initiate first. The opponent then gives us something real to adapt to.

The technique provides the first route.

What happens when the opponent tries to close that route is where the next part of the training begins.

Then the opponent resists

Once the first version works, the training partner changes what they are doing. Maybe they block the punch, change the position of the arm, counterattack, or simply find a way to stop our progress. Something that worked a moment ago now fails, or at least no longer works in exactly the same way.

One possible response is to add more strength and try to force the original movement through. Sometimes that may even work, but it teaches us very little about adaptation. The opponent's resistance has changed the situation, and importantly, that resistance often creates contact. The contact gives us information.

Through that contact, we can begin to feel where our progress is being stopped, where the resistance is coming from, and sometimes where the opponent has created a new opening by trying to close another one. Instead of blindly insisting that the original technique must still work, we can use that information to change what we are doing.

Adapt to the resistance

The adjustment does not always need to be large. Perhaps the hand changes direction, our position shifts slightly, another hand becomes available, or the opponent's attempt to stop us exposes a different route forward. The exact solution is less important than learning the process of recognizing what has changed and responding to it without losing sight of the objective.

This is why adaptability is different from simply collecting more techniques. We are not trying to memorize one predetermined answer for every possible counter. We are learning to recognize resistance, understand what it is doing to our progress, and find a way around it.

The objective remains. The resistance changes. So the route changes.

Adaptability is not the destination. It is a means of continuing when the route we initially chose is no longer available.

When it works, continue

This is why the next part of the sequence is so important: CONTINUE. If our adaptation succeeds, we do not automatically stop and reset simply because another movement worked. The fight may not be over, and the overall objective has not necessarily been achieved.

This connects directly to one of the ideas we use throughout Functional Wing Chun: Identify. Clear. Continue. Identify what is stopping your progress, clear it, and then continue toward the objective. If the opponent changes again, we adapt again. We act, they resist, the contact gives us information, we change what we are doing, and we continue.

The route may change several times in only a few moments. The objective does not.

And ultimately, finish

There is a danger when we talk too much about flow, adaptability and continuous movement. It can begin to sound as though continuing indefinitely is somehow the goal. It isn't. If fighting is unavoidable, we want it to end as quickly as possible.

So the full idea is not simply adapt and continue. It is adapt so that you can continue toward the finish. Becoming more adaptable makes us harder to stop, and becoming harder to stop matters because every unnecessary reset gives the opponent more time and another opportunity to attack, recover or change the situation.

The purpose of adaptability is therefore very practical: become harder to stop so that you can finish the fight as quickly as possible.

Adaptability during contact

There are many ways to be adaptable in martial arts. You can change strategy before engagement, adjust distance or timing, choose a different attack, change position, or decide that engagement should be avoided altogether. All of these forms of adaptability are important.

Functional Wing Chun also places considerable emphasis on something else: adapting after contact has already been established. We initiate, the opponent resists, and that resistance creates contact. The contact gives us information, and we use that information to adjust what we are doing while trying to preserve the initiative and continue toward the objective.

This is one reason contact training such as Chi Sao plays such an important role in Wing Chun. Contact is not something we maintain simply for the sake of staying connected. It allows us to feel change. It tells us when the route is no longer clear, and it gives us information that can help us find another one.

The goal stays. The route changes.

Perhaps this is where the image of being “like water” becomes particularly useful. Water does not insist on travelling through an obstacle exactly as it originally approached it. It changes according to what it encounters, but that does not mean becoming directionless.

Functional Wing Chun works in much the same way. The goal stays. The route changes. We initiate toward an objective, encounter resistance, use the contact to gather information, adapt, continue, and, when possible, finish.

WORKS → BLOCKED / COUNTERED → ADAPT → WORKS → CONTINUE → FINISH

A technique is where the exercise begins. Learning how to keep going when the opponent tries to stop it is where adaptability begins.

When a Drill Stops Solving the Problem

Every training drill should have a purpose.

Not simply to look good.

Not to preserve tradition.

Not because it has always been done that way.

A drill exists to develop a specific ability that supports the overall objective of the system.

This raises an important question.

What is the purpose of Chi Sao?

FWC defines Chi Sao as the systematic study of continuing progress after contact has been established.

Once we understand that objective, every Chi Sao drill can be evaluated using the same standard:

Does this drill improve the ability to continue progressing against a resisting opponent after contact has been established?

If the answer is yes, it deserves a place in training.

If the answer is no, we should ask what it is actually developing.

When Patterns Replace Problems

Many modern Chi Sao systems rely heavily on fixed sequences and predetermined patterns.

These patterns undoubtedly develop certain abilities. They improve coordination, familiarity with movement, timing with a cooperative partner, and the ability to remember increasingly complex combinations.

However, they also change the nature of the drill.

The moment the sequence becomes known, uncertainty begins to disappear.

Instead of identifying obstacles, the student remembers what comes next.

Instead of asking questions through contact, the student waits for the expected answer.

Instead of adapting, the student recalls.

Gradually, memory replaces decision-making.

The original problem that Chi Sao was meant to solve begins to disappear.

Does It Still Work Under Resistance?

There is a simple question worth asking.

What happens when the partner stops cooperating?

Not by becoming aggressive or competitive, but simply by refusing to follow the pattern.

In my own experience, this is where many fixed Chi Sao sequences begin to fall apart.

The practitioner often has to abandon the memorized pattern and start solving the problem in real time.

Ironically, this is exactly the skill the pattern was supposed to develop.

The drill has prepared the student to remember a sequence, but not necessarily to adapt when the sequence no longer exists.

Flow Is Not the Same as Function

One reason these patterns remain enjoyable is that they create a wonderful feeling of flow.

Two experienced partners can perform long, smooth exchanges with excellent rhythm and coordination.

The experience is satisfying.

But it is important to ask what is creating that feeling.

The flow comes largely from shared expectation.

Each partner already knows what is coming next.

In that sense, the exchange becomes more like a rehearsed routine than a conversation with an unpredictable opponent.

There is nothing wrong with practicing coordination.

The mistake is believing that coordination alone develops the ability to deal with resistance.

The Purpose of FWC Chi Sao

FWC takes a different approach.

Rather than memorizing increasingly complicated answers, we try to preserve the original problem.

The student should still have to:

• identify what is preventing progress,
• make tactical decisions,
• adapt to changing pressure,
• continue moving forward,
• and solve the problem without knowing exactly what will happen next.

Complexity is reduced when necessary, but the problem itself is never removed.

This is why FWC uses progressive resistance instead of progressive choreography.

The objective is not to remember more.

The objective is to become better at solving problems.

Training Parts of the Whole

Every drill in FWC has a specific job.

Lap Sao introduces the objective of identifying, clearing, and continuing.

Dan Chi Sao simplifies coordination when necessary without changing that objective.

Rolling Chi Sao develops continuous information gathering and adaptation.

Lat Sao bridges Chi Sao to striking under pressure.

The wooden dummy becomes a laboratory where problems discovered through Chi Sao can be explored and refined before being tested again against resistance.

Each drill trains part of the same engagement.

None of them replace the engagement itself.

Memory or Experience?

Experience cannot be memorized.

It must be earned.

Every time a student encounters resistance, identifies an obstacle, experiments with a solution, and succeeds or fails, they gain experience that no fixed sequence can provide.

This is why FWC places progressive resistance at the centre of training.

Not because resistance makes training harder.

Because resistance preserves the very problem Chi Sao was created to solve.

Conclusion

Chi Sao was never meant to become an exercise in remembering increasingly complicated patterns.

Its purpose is far more practical.

It exists to develop the ability to continue progressing after contact has been established.

Whenever a training method replaces tactical decision-making with memorization, it risks losing the very quality that made Chi Sao valuable in the first place.

For FWC, the question is always the same:

Does this drill preserve the real problem?

If it does, it deserves our time.

If it does not, then no matter how elegant, complicated, or traditional it appears, it is training something other than the ability to solve a resisting opponent.

型になった詠春黐手は、本来の目的を果たしているのか？

どんな稽古にも、必ず目的があるべきです。

見た目を良くするためでもなければ、

伝統だから続けるためでもなく、

「昔からそうだから」という理由でもありません。

稽古とは、システム全体の目的を達成するために必要な能力を育てるものです。

では、黐手（Chi Sao）の目的とは何でしょうか。

FWCでは、黐手を次のように定義しています。

「接触が生じた後も、前進し続ける能力を体系的に学ぶための稽古。」

この目的が明確になれば、どんな黐手の稽古も同じ基準で評価できます。

その稽古は、抵抗する相手と接触した後でも前進し続ける能力を育てているだろうか。

もし育てているなら、その稽古には価値があります。

もしそうでないなら、その稽古はいったい何を育てているのでしょうか。

型が「問題」を置き換えてしまう

現在、多くの詠春拳では決められた黐手のパターンが教えられています。

こうしたパターンには確かに良い点があります。

動きの協調性。

基本動作の確認。

リズム。

複雑な動きを覚える能力。

しかし同時に、稽古そのものの性質も変わってしまいます。

動きが決まっている瞬間から、不確実性は消え始めます。

障害を見つける代わりに、次の動きを思い出す。

相手に問いかける代わりに、決まった答えを待つ。

状況に応じて判断する代わりに、記憶をたどる。

少しずつ、判断が記憶へと置き換わってしまうのです。

そして、本来黐手が鍛えるべき能力が失われていきます。

抵抗されたらどうなるか

一つ、シンプルな質問があります。

相手が型どおりに動かなかったらどうなるでしょうか。

喧嘩腰になる必要はありません。

ただ、決められた流れに従わないだけです。

私自身の経験では、多くの固定パターンはこの時点で機能しなくなります。

結局、覚えた型を捨て、その場で考え、問題を解決しなければならなくなります。

皮肉なことに、それこそが黐手で本来身につけるべき能力なのです。

「流れ」があることと、「機能する」ことは違う

固定パターンが人気なのには理由があります。

上級者同士が行えば、とても滑らかで美しい流れが生まれます。

息もぴったり合い、一体感があります。

しかし、その「流れ」は何によって生まれているのでしょうか。

それは、お互いが次に何が来るか知っているからです。

つまり、相手との対話ではなく、

あらかじめ決められた振り付けを二人で演じている状態に近づいていきます。

もちろん、協調性を鍛えること自体は悪いことではありません。

しかし、協調性と、抵抗する相手への対応力は同じではありません。

FWCの考え方

FWCは別の考え方を採用しています。

複雑な答えを覚えるのではなく、

本来解決すべき問題を残したまま稽古する。

そのため、稽古では常に

• 何が前進を妨げているのかを見つける。
• 接触から情報を得る。
• 状況を判断する。
• 障害をクリアする。
• 前進を続ける。

この流れが失われません。

必要に応じて難しさは下げます。

しかし、問題そのものは取り除きません。

だからFWCでは、

複雑な型を増やすのではなく、段階的に抵抗を増やしていきます。

目的は、より多く覚えることではありません。

より良く問題を解決できるようになることです。

稽古は「全体」の一部を鍛えるもの

FWCでは、それぞれの稽古に明確な役割があります。

Lap Sao は「見つける・クリアする・続ける」という目的を学ぶ。

Dan Chi Sao は両手の動きを身につけるため、一時的に片手へ単純化する回帰練習です。

Poon Sao（ローリング）は、接触の中で情報を得続け、状況に適応する能力を育てます。

Lat Sao は、黐手と実際の打撃を結びつける橋渡しです。

木人樁は、黐手やスパーリングで見つかった課題に対し、より良い答えを探し、磨き上げるための研究室になります。

どの稽古も、一つの目的に向かう全体の一部です。

どれか一つが、その全体の代わりになることはありません。

記憶ではなく経験

経験は覚えるものではありません。

積み重ねるものです。

抵抗する相手と向き合い、

問題を見つけ、

解決策を試し、

成功し、失敗する。

その積み重ねこそが、本当の経験になります。

だからFWCでは、段階的な抵抗を稽古の中心に置いています。

抵抗があるから難しいのではありません。

抵抗があるからこそ、本来鍛えるべき問題が残るのです。

おわりに

黐手は、本来「複雑な型を覚える稽古」ではありません。

接触が生じたあとも前進し続ける能力を育てるための稽古です。

もし稽古が判断力を記憶へ置き換えてしまうなら、

その稽古は、黐手が本来育てるべき能力とは別のものを育てているのかもしれません。

FWCでは、いつも同じ問いを立てます。

「この稽古は、本当に解決すべき問題を残しているだろうか。」

もし残しているなら、その稽古には価値があります。

もし残していないなら、どれほど美しく、複雑で、歴史があったとしても、それは「抵抗する相手を相手に問題を解決する能力」とは別のものを鍛えていることになります。
